How has the Pandemic Redistributed the World’s Wealth?

2021.10.22 04:31 grumpy-techie How has the Pandemic Redistributed the World’s Wealth?

How has the Pandemic Redistributed the World’s Wealth?
At a recent IMF event on recovering nations from the coronavirus pandemic, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the COVID-19 coronavirus plunged over 100 million people into poverty, with over 4 billion people with little or no social support.
Hardly anyone would deny that the coronavirus pandemic is having a disastrous impact on the world, its people, its economies, and, most importantly, on the means of subsistence of about a quarter of the world’s population, which is already at or beyond the point of vulnerability and dependence. Without work – even casual, hourly, or daily work to earn money to buy food – people are doomed to die of disease, starvation, or complete neglect. For 40 million Americans, the pandemic resulted in a hike in unemployment benefits, reaching its highest level in decades. For many small companies, it threatened bankruptcy and withdrawal from the market.
The coronavirus pandemic has hit the world with unprecedented damage across the vast majority of sectors. The transport, aviation, tourism, and energy industries have suffered huge losses.
Nevertheless, as the statistics quoted by many media outlets show, to some, the global crisis caused by COVID-19 has brought not ruin but new super profits, confirming the postulate that “in times of change and turmoil, the rich become richer and the poor become poorer.”
According to the Swiss bank UBS, during the coronavirus disaster, the combined fortune of our planet’s billionaire super-rich has grown to $14.7 trillion, as a study by the Hurun Research Institute confirms. This is a record high, well above the level of 2017, when it was considered the highest. The number of dollar billionaires has also increased to over three thousand. The most significant piece of the coronavirus pie came from those whose business was initially related to medicine and, in particular, pharmacology. Their wealth increased by 50%. Prominent among the lucky ones are Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna Therapeutics, an American company awarded a grant for developing a vaccine against coronavirus (his fortune doubled during the pandemic to more than $1.5 billion), and Gustavo Denegri, chairman of DiaSorin biotech producing COVID-19 test systems and diagnostic kits (his wealth increased by one-third, reaching $4.5 billion). Alain Mérieux, BioMérieux founder, increased his wealth by a quarter, to $ 7.6 billion, on similar products – tests that can quickly determine the presence of human coronavirus. The list of “medical billionaires” in the current era of the coronavirus is quite extensive.
The owners of modern high-tech companies were in ‘just’ a somewhat less advantageous position. The increase in their wealth was also clearly predictable because, with active digitalization and computerization, the coronavirus literally squeezed the whole world online, and at the same time, required complex technological and intelligent solutions for a lot of things that seemed elementary to us before its arrival. So it’s not surprising that Jeff Bezos, with his Amazon, whose fortune recently surpassed $200 billion, has nothing to complain about. The owners of such companies as TikTok, Zoom, Netflix, Microsoft, whose capitalization increase is estimated by financial experts to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars at least, are clearly not at a loss.
This sharp increase in economic inequality has been proposed to be responded to by measures suggested by economists Thomas Piketty and Gabriel Zucman, who favor raising taxes on the richest people, reports France 24. Argentina, in particular, has followed this path, with legislation passed last December to finance the fight against the impact of the pandemic, imposing a tax on large property assets that could generate about $3 billion for the country.
“The Virus of Inequality” was the name of NGO Oxfam’s annual report on economic inequality in the world published back in January for the opening of the World Economic Forum (WEF). Tech giants have benefited the most from the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, the poor may take more than a decade to recover, according to the study. According to Oxfam, this is the most significant economic crisis since the 1930s.
At the same time, “the billions of people who were living on the edge of poverty at the beginning of the pandemic no longer have either the income or support to survive the crisis,” said Dhananjayan Sivaguru, the CEO of Oxfam GB. Meanwhile, a small group of the world’s wealthiest people have amassed more money than they will be able to spend in their lifetime, Oxfam’s report says. The study indicates that the richest people on the planet were able to return to their previous level of wealth at the end of 2020, despite the deep crisis in the world from the pandemic. Some of them were able to significantly increase their assets thanks to the Covid pandemic.
Since March 2020, the wealth of the ten wealthiest people in the world has increased by $540 billion, more than it would cost to vaccinate all the people on the planet! The study was based on a survey of some 300 economists from 79 countries, notes Frankfurter Rundschau. The income inequality will continue to widen or increase dramatically during the Covid crisis, as expected by 87% of academics surveyed.
Research by the International Monetary Fund also shows that the pandemic only widens the already existing gap between the economies of the world’s richest and poorest countries. In the developing world, with a younger but more vulnerable population, where most people are still unvaccinated against COVID-19 and where governments cannot afford sustainable stimulus measures, economies are increasingly lagging as they try to recover from last year’s record recession. According to the Pew Research Center, the middle class in these countries, which is a key engine of economics, educational and political development, is rapidly shrinking.
The UN Development Programme estimates that, with school closures and the distance learning gap, 86% of primary-school-age children in countries with a low Human Development Index are now out of school, compared with 20% in countries with a high Human Development Index. Humanity may be coming to terrifying values not seen since the 1980s.
Data from developing countries show that children from the poorest households are still three times less likely to reach their fifth birthday than children from the wealthiest families. Against the overall backdrop of declines in global maternal mortality during the pandemic, these countries saw increases in maternal mortality, stillbirths, ectopic pregnancies, and parental depression. Studies show that the burden of pandemic mortality is positively related to national per capita income.
That’s why it is not surprising that conspiracy theories in various countries have lately become more and more popular, particularly regarding the fact that “the fourth revolution,” or to be more exact – the real war against humanity, is allegedly being prepared for the world. With this conclusion, the famous American journalist James Corbett has tried for several years to warn people about the impending “great reset” for total control over them. Corbett continues to write that the coronavirus pandemic is only a method by which long-term monitoring and control of people are planned.
This, in particular, explains the decision earlier this year by the Court of Appeals of the Peruvian provinces of Chincha and Pisco in the southern region of Ica, which declared the involvement of “the world’s dominant criminal elites” in the emergence of a new type of coronavirus epidemic. “None of the world’s governments, no natural or legal person, or the defendant’s defense can confirm that the epidemic has the property of “predictability”, except its creators among the authors of the new world order, such as Bill Gates, George Soros, Rockefeller and others who manage and direct it in conditions of extreme secrecy by their global corporations, which make forecasts until 2030,” Peru.21 quoted the text of the court-adopted document.

2021.10.22 04:31 DemoEvolved Should overtime base health be tipped up depending on how long the base had been standing before overtime was triggered?

In the current game design, if a team takes a base early and defends it, the base still takes chip damage for three+ minutes. There is no way to really block chip damage and that is ok for normal base capture mechanics. However a problem is that the team that effectively holds the base for the whole game enters overtime with a heavily chipped base. Meanwhile the other team that captured the other base one time in the last minute of normal play now has a nearly full health base with fresh defenses as well. This can lead to situations where it is unintuitively the best play to let the enemy team destroy a wounded base in normal time so you can reclaim it with full health before overtime. That doesn’t make sense to randoms. A way to solve this is to reward a team for long holding a base upon entering overtime. Eg. If a team had held a base for 75% of normal time, then restore the base to 75% health. If it is higher then do nothing. Would this mechanic improve fairness in overtime?

2021.10.22 04:30 Layne_Staleys_Ghost From Bronze to Mythic in 4 days with UR Phoenix in the BO1 ladder

Just got back into playing Arena after more than a year and decided to give Historic a try. Here's the list:
4 Dragon's Rage Channeler 4 Arclight Phoenix 4 Sprite Dragon 1 Ox of Agonas
4 Expressive Iteration 4 Faithless Looting 2 Pillar of Flame 2 Finale of Promise
4 Consider 4 Opt 4 Unholy Heat 2 Lightning Axe 2 Spikefield Hazard
4 Steam Vents 4 Spirebluff Canal 4 Riverglide Pathway 2 Sulfur Falls 3 Mountain 2 Island
This list is tweaked to fight the creature decks plaguing the BO1 ladder. 10 removal spells gives you a ton of game against elves, mono white, RDW, and shaman decks I saw so much of. You only need 19 lands because of the way the computer cheats for you in BO1 queues.
Card choices:
4x Dragon Rage's Channelers - Darcy, my Queen. I simp for this card. Best card since Delver of Secrets. Both wincon and engine this is easily one of the most powerful cards in historic and I feel this is the best shell for her.
4x Sprite Dragon - some lists run fewer but I enjoy having a threat that isn't reliant on the graveyard to function. It's also your best way to deal large chunks of damage against soul sisters style decks.
4x Arclight Phoenix - the name of the game
1x Ox of Agonas - love this guy as my 13th threat. He really helps in grindy games and is a good to discard to looting.
4x Faithless Looting - I can't believe this card is legal in historic. You generally hold on to these until you go off with Phoenix but using them to get delirium is super useful.
4x Expressive Iteration - this is your rebuild card once your intial threats are removed and it keeps you flowing on cards when your trading one for one with your opponents creatures. Best divination ever printed.
2x Pillar of Flame - my MVP my entire climb up the ladder. The exile is super relevant, the ability to go face is superb and being a sorcery is relevant when you need to finale two removal spells.
2x Finale of Promise - most lists only run one but I was always super happy to draw it so I bumped it up to two. Its the nail in the coffin for your opponent when your trying to grind out games. I wouldn't run two without Pillar of Flame.
4x Opt/Consider - cantrips are the glue that hold the deck together. Consider is better obviously but both are nessesary. Just remember that 2 lands 5 draw spells is not a keepable hand.
4x Unholy Heat - I'd play this over lightning bolt even if bolt was legal. Well, maybe lol. It kills exactly what you need it to at any stage of the game.
2x Lightning Axe - the card can be clunky but when it's good it's great. The deck needs another way to discard phoenix and this kills something on the way.
2x Spikefield Hazard - this was the latest edition to the deck once I hit platinum and saw nothing but creature decks. It does the job it was designed for and let's you run fewer lands.
19x lands - this is all you need. Two land hands are optimal and the computer will give you them 80% of the time with only nineteen lands in the deck.
Tips for playing:
Your best hands are two lands, two threats, two draw spells, one removal spell. Your optimum hand is Canal, Canal, Darcy, Consider, Unholy Heat, Looting, Phoenix. Dragon's Rage Channeler is the best card in your opening hand. Mulligan hands with one land, or nothing but lands and draw spells. You don't have time to dig for a threat and answers against aggro decks and you definitely don't have time to struggle to hit your land drops.
Never cast Expressive Iteration on turn two unless your under pressure and have literally nothing else to do.
Turn 3 is your early combo turn but it's a hail Mary without a Phoenix already in hand or your yard. I'd rather cast an Iteration or Sprite Dragon + cantrip turn 3 if you don't have a Phoenix. When combing, lead with other draw spells before looting to maximize your chance of hitting another Phoenix. Also, comboing with Darcy in play let's you see another three cards to try and hit another Phoenix.
Don't be afraid to just cast your Phoenixes in grindier games.
Be careful not to go all in when you suspect stuff like anger of the gods, settle the wreckage, and graveyard hate. You don't want all your phoenixes exiled. Slow rolls your threats if you need to.
RDW - the key is the keep them off creatures while still pressuring them enough that they have to point their burn spells at your creatures.
Monowhite - Esper Sentinel and Thalia are their best cards against you. You want to take a controlling role with burn spells. Darcy is your best threat against them because it helps you dig for more removal. It's a solid matchup but can be rough if you keep a hand with no removal; especially on the draw.
Shamans - Their best hands beat your best hands but they are way less consistent. Your still the underdog and being on the draw drops your chances significantly. Save your good removal for their Harmonic Progity and try to leave up removal for Rage Forger. This is very much a race though; it's hard to out card thier collected companies and doubled elvish visionary triggers.
Jund Sacrifice - I didn't have much trouble with these decks but I only played against it half a dozen times. An early combo turn really punishes their durdly play style.
Elves - never lost a game to elves. Your removal stacks you so well against them. I have had many a player scoop to the 3rd or 4th burn spell.
Goblins - only played against goblins a few times and definitely had a losing record against them. You have to be the aggro deck here because their late game Muxus plays will destroy you. Kill Skirk Prospector on sight.
Gruul - Bone Crusher Giant is an annoying two for one that makes it difficult for you to grind them out but your removal lines you pretty good against them otherwise.
Niv Control - you want to tempo them out as hard as possible. Watch out for the Territorial Kavu's exile on attack. Luckily your Unholy Heat does just enough to kill Niv with delerium active so you generally have a window to take them out when they cast him.
Nine Lives Combo - played against this three times. You can't beat their combo so you have to rush them. Coincidentally lost three times when they comboed off.
Alternative Card choices:
Brazen Borrower - I had this card in my deck until gold. I was never really happy to see it but it does make some unwinnable games winnable so I can understand the appeal.
Crackling Drake - Great in grindier matchups and would definitely be in the SB if I played BO3 against gy hate. Needs a higher land count to support them. If you're playing 3 or more I'd suggest maximize velocity.
Stormwing Entity - not a bad card but it feels like a worse Sprite Dragon most of the time. I tried them for a while but didn't like them.
UR Phoenix feels really well positioned on the ladder at the moment and I can't recommend it enough. Hope you guys liked my write up. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

2021.10.22 04:30 astralwannabe Reader1984 - A news aggregator aiming at mitigating against journalism bias

The motivation:
- I don’t like journalism bias, each media would often report events from their own interest & profit.
- Giant news media monopolies would easily control how an event is being reported, I would like to hear the voices from smalleindependent journalistic platforms.
- I would like to read the latest news about certain events and to read things that I am concerned about, not just the news that a news media thinks is important.
The idea & experiment:
- I’m trying to mitigate this by creating a news aggregator that allows the user to select the news sources they would like to read. I expect that news reports from different sources would have different perspectives, therefore intriguing the readers to critically think behind these cross-references and approach the truth behind just texts.
- The ability to create optional keyword filters (AND+OR+NOT) to narrow down the topics to read what matters to the users.
The URL is
It is pretty barebone at the moment and I am still planning the roadmap for this idea.

I’d like to get more feedbacks not only on the website itself but also on my overall idea and its effectiveness in tackling these problems mentioned above.
Thanks for your time reading this, I really appreciate it.
